So yea, my knowledge of Mdm Cheong was only that much... until yesterday's visit. Mdm Cheong was showing us a publication by Touch, featuring different people whom they have changed their lives - one of them was Mdm Cheong. So this 2 page write up with another 2 page of her photos illustrated her story of coming into contact with touch and eventually being "saved" by touch.
I cant remember exactly everything that was written in the publication (thats why my CAP so jialat) , but basically its talking about Mdm Cheong lived with her husband and didnt have any kids - so they depended on each other aka 相依为命. So when her husband passed away due to some disease, she fell into depression. She began not to cook for herself, not bathing, not getting out of the house - simply because she didnt find the need to survive anymore. She even went to elderly home herself, hoping that they would take her in, so she can rely on them, and not having the need to do anything anymore. but the home rejected her because she didnt have any guarantor.
To be honest, she is one of the elderly I respect most, due to her positive outlook on life, and her being actively volunteering at the age of 80. *salute*. but never did I expect her to have depression before.
So yea,I guess this is something that can motivate all of us in continuing volunteering - you never know what you do can help to change someone's life. Apart from Mdm Cheong, that publication has a lot of inspiring stories. Do borrow the copy from Mdm Cheong to read the next time you visit her! :)
